California Primary Results Set November House Matchups in Key Battleground Districts
Several California congressional primary elections have determined November matchups, including progressive vs. incumbent races in competitive districts.

Primary election results in California have set the stage for several competitive House races in November, with outcomes in multiple districts reflecting broader tensions within both major parties.
In the 22nd Congressional District, progressive candidate Randy Villegas advanced to face incumbent Republican Rep. David Valadao in what is considered a key battleground race. Villegas, an educator and activist who received backing from Bernie Sanders, defeated California State Assemblymember Jasmeet Bains in the Democratic primary. The district has been competitive in recent cycles, with Valadao having survived multiple challenges despite the area's shifting demographics.
The 6th Congressional District will feature a notable matchup between Rep. Kevin Kiley, who dropped his Republican affiliation earlier this year to become an independent, and Democrat Richard Pan, a doctor and small business owner. Kiley garnered approximately 24.5 percent of the vote compared to Pan's 23.2 percent. The newly drawn district is considered favorable to Democrats, potentially putting Kiley's seat at risk.
In the 40th Congressional District, both Republican incumbents Rep. Ken Calvert and Rep. Young Kim advanced to the November election, setting up an unusual same-party general election contest between two sitting members of Congress.
The results reflect ongoing divisions within the Democratic Party between progressive and establishment wings, particularly evident in the 22nd District where Villegas's victory over the establishment-backed Bains highlighted internal party tensions about future direction and messaging strategies.
