Residents of Havana are confronting a severe garbage crisis as fuel shortages have brought the city's waste collection system to a near standstill. Piles of rotting trash have accumulated on street corners throughout the Cuban capital, home to 2 million of Cuba's nearly 10 million residents.

The situation has deteriorated significantly in recent months, with state-run garbage trucks operating only irregularly due to fuel shortages linked to power outages and broader energy supply problems. According to municipal data from July, Havana produces approximately 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of solid waste daily, with collection services previously managing only 57% of that volume even under normal conditions.

Health officials have raised concerns as residents have resorted to burning waste in the streets, creating potentially toxic smoke. The improvised dump sites attract swarms of flies and stray animals, while the stench from decomposing organic matter permeates neighborhoods. María Odalys Ramírez, a 63-year-old resident living near a major hospital, described the conditions as "completely unsanitary."

Odalys Goicochea, an official at Cuba's ministry of science, technology and environment, warned that the current waste management crisis could worsen as summer temperatures rise and hurricane season approaches. The combination of heat and moisture threatens to accelerate the proliferation of disease-carrying insects.

In response to the crisis, community-led initiatives have emerged to address the problem locally. One such effort, called El Batazo, operates across eight Havana blocks with volunteers collecting pre-sorted household waste twice daily, selling recyclable materials, and repurposing food scraps for livestock feed. Project collaborator Evelyn Martínez said the initiative demonstrates that communities can maintain cleaner environments and find productive uses for waste materials.
