A drone strike caused a fire outside the United Arab Emirates' Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, according to UAE authorities. The fire broke out in an external electrical generator outside the perimeter of the facility, with no reports of injuries or impact on radiological safety levels.

The UAE's nuclear regulator confirmed that all units at the plant continue operating normally, while the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that radiation levels remain normal. The Abu Dhabi media office stated there was no impact on the plant's safety systems. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, and UAE officials did not assign blame to any party.

According to reports from multiple sources, UAE air defenses engaged three drones that entered from the western border, with two intercepted before the third struck the electrical generator. This marks the first time the four-reactor Barakah facility has been targeted during the ongoing regional conflict.

The $20 billion nuclear power plant, built with South Korean assistance and operational since 2020, is the first and only nuclear facility on the Arabian Peninsula. The reactor is located in the western deserts of Abu Dhabi, near the Saudi Arabian border.

The incident occurs amid continued tensions in the region, with reports indicating that talks between Iran and the United States remain stalled. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transit, remains a focal point of the dispute. Senator Lindsey Graham called the ongoing situation "hurting us all," while G-7 finance ministers are reportedly meeting to address economic consequences of the prolonged regional tensions.
