Retired Atlanta Principal Returns to Same School as Handyman
David White, who served 15 years as principal at Burgess-Peterson Academy, returned to work at the school as a handyman after retirement.
David White, 58, has returned to work at Burgess-Peterson Academy in Atlanta, but not in his former role as principal. After retiring from a 33-year career in education, White has taken on duties as the school's handyman.
White spent the final 15 years of his educational career serving as principal at the Atlanta elementary school. His total tenure in education spanned more than three decades before he decided to retire.
Following his retirement, White initially stayed home but found himself restless. He described his post-retirement period as "just hanging out with the cat" before deciding to return to work in a different capacity.
Rather than seeking another administrative position, White chose to come back to the same school where he had served as principal, but now performing maintenance and handyman duties. He expressed satisfaction with his new role, stating that he feels he is "contributing meaningfully" to the school community.
The career change represents an unusual transition for a former school administrator, moving from educational leadership to facility maintenance at the same institution where he previously held the top position.
