Secret Service shoots armed suspect near Washington Monument after gunfire exchange
A person was shot by Secret Service officers near the Washington Monument Monday after allegedly firing at agents who approached the suspicious individual.

Secret Service officers shot an armed suspect near the Washington Monument on Monday afternoon after the individual allegedly opened fire on agents, according to officials.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. at 15th Street and Independence Avenue, adjacent to the Washington Monument. Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn said plainclothes officers first observed a suspicious individual who appeared to be carrying a firearm.
When uniformed Secret Service agents arrived as backup, the suspect fled on foot, drew a weapon and fired at the officers, Quinn said during a press briefing. The officers then returned fire, shooting the individual. The person's condition was not immediately known.
The shooting prompted security concerns at the nearby White House, where press members were evacuated from the North Lawn as a precautionary measure. The incident occurred shortly after Vice President JD Vance's motorcade had passed through the area.
It was not immediately clear whether the incident had any connection to President Trump or White House operations. The Secret Service has not released additional details about the suspect's identity or motive.
The shooting comes amid heightened security concerns in the nation's capital, occurring one week after a separate security incident during the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
