Julie Le, a former Justice Department attorney, announced Wednesday that she is launching a Democratic primary challenge against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) for her congressional seat.

Le previously gained public attention during her time as a federal prosecutor when she made courtroom statements expressing frustration with her caseload related to immigration enforcement operations during the Trump administration. She told a federal judge that she was overwhelmed by the volume of cases resulting from immigration enforcement activities.

The former prosecutor's comments in court drew media coverage and highlighted tensions within the Justice Department over immigration policy implementation during that period.

Le is running on a platform that includes immigration reform and education funding, according to her campaign materials. She joins the Democratic primary race in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, which covers Minneapolis and surrounding areas.

Omar, who was first elected to Congress in 2018, has represented the district since taking office. The incumbent congresswoman has been a prominent progressive voice in the House of Representatives and a member of the informal group known as "The Squad."

The Democratic primary election will determine who advances to face any Republican challengers in the general election for the seat.
