President Donald Trump announced Saturday his plan to nominate James McDonald to serve as the next United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, one of the most prominent federal prosecutor positions in the country.

McDonald, described as a former commodities regulator and ex-personal attorney to Trump, would take over leadership of an office that handles high-profile federal cases in Manhattan and the surrounding area. The Southern District of New York is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious and influential U.S. attorney offices.

The nomination comes as Trump continues to make key appointments for his administration. The position requires Senate confirmation before McDonald can officially assume the role.

Meanwhile, separately on Sunday, Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.) expressed support for current U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton's qualifications for a different role as director of national intelligence. Warner stated that Clayton has the "right temperament" for the intelligence position, though concerns remain regarding the temporary appointment of Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte.

The Southern District of New York attorney position oversees federal prosecutions in Manhattan, the Bronx, and several other New York counties, including cases involving financial crimes, terrorism, and corruption.
