Former NFL linebacker Aldon Smith has died at age 36, the San Francisco 49ers announced Saturday night.

Smith, who played for the 49ers from 2011 to 2014, achieved notable success early in his NFL career. He became the fastest player in league history to reach 30 career sacks, accomplishing the milestone in just his first two seasons.

The defensive lineman was selected as an All-Pro during his time with San Francisco, establishing himself as one of the league's premier pass rushers. Smith recorded 19.5 sacks in his rookie season and followed up with 19 sacks in his second year.

The 49ers organization made the announcement of Smith's passing on Saturday evening. No cause of death was immediately provided by the team or Smith's representatives.

Smith's NFL career also included stints with the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys after his departure from San Francisco. His record for fastest to 30 career sacks remains a notable achievement in NFL history.
