A shooting in Midland, Texas on Friday morning left one person dead and nine others hospitalized, according to city officials and police.
The shooting began around 8 a.m. in one area of the city and moved to near a veterinary hospital, Mayor Lori Blong said. A witness working at a nearby automobile body shop reported hearing what sounded like at least 40 shots being fired.
Nine victims were taken to Midland Memorial Hospital, where four required surgery while five others were treated and released, hospital officials said. The patients who underwent surgery were reported to be in stable condition.
Police engaged in a standoff with the suspected shooter that lasted approximately two hours. Officers used an armored vehicle and deployed robots during the operation. The suspect was later reported dead, though authorities did not specify the circumstances of the death.
Video footage from the scene showed multiple officers exiting an armored police vehicle as they worked to contain the situation. Mayor Blong had earlier described the situation as "still evolving" while officers worked to secure the area.
The shooting occurred in Midland's downtown area, and authorities have not yet released information about a possible motive or the identity of the suspect.
