The Pentagon on Friday released its third batch of files related to unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), commonly known as UFOs, adding 72 new documents, images and recordings to the public record.

The release comes as government interest in UAPs has moved from fringe topic to mainstream policy discussion. In May 2022, the House Intelligence Subcommittee held public hearings on UAPs, featuring testimony from Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence Scott Bray and other officials.

The growing government transparency around UAPs has sparked broader cultural conversations about the implications of potential extraterrestrial life. Religious scholars and leaders have offered varying perspectives on how the existence of alien life might affect faith traditions. Diana Walsh Pasulka, a religion scholar at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, suggested that UFO interest could actually strengthen religious worldviews rather than undermine them.

Some religious figures have expressed skepticism about the nature of UAP phenomena. Vice President JD Vance recently stated his belief that UAPs might be demonic rather than extraterrestrial in origin, echoing views expressed by some Catholic clergy.

Historians note that speculation about life on other worlds dates back to ancient Greek philosophers, though modern UFO concepts emerged primarily after 1945. Several contemporary religious movements, including Scientology and Raëlism, have incorporated beliefs about extraterrestrial beings into their doctrines.

The Pentagon's disclosure efforts represent a significant shift in government policy, moving from decades of secrecy to regular public releases of UAP-related materials.
