The Nordecke, which grew to nearly 600 members during the Save the Crew campaign, exemplifies the passionate soccer fanbase that helped make Columbus attractive for NWSL expansion.

However, the NWSL team's funding structure has generated controversy, particularly regarding the use of public money for facilities and operations.
