European, UK Officials Call for Increased Defense Spending Amid Security Concerns
Italy's defense minister advocates for new European military alliance while UK announces defense investment plan ahead of NATO summit.

European officials are calling for increased defense spending and new security arrangements as geopolitical tensions continue to influence military planning across the continent.
Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said in an interview that European nations should establish a new joint defense system and assume greater responsibility for their own security. The proposal comes as European leaders reassess their military capabilities and alliance structures.
Separately, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced plans to release a long-delayed 10-year defense investment plan ahead of an upcoming NATO summit where he is expected to meet with former President Trump. The defense investment plan was originally scheduled for publication last autumn but has faced repeated delays.
The announcements come amid ongoing concerns about regional security threats, with officials citing the need for enhanced military preparedness. Starmer indicated the UK would "step up" its defense spending as part of the new investment framework.
Meanwhile, in the Asia-Pacific region, a senior US diplomat stated that Taiwan needs to "spend smarter" on its defense capabilities, reflecting broader international discussions about military resource allocation and strategic planning.
