Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian-French author and illustrator best known for her autobiographical graphic novel series 'Persepolis', has died at age 56.

Satrapi gained international recognition for 'Persepolis', which chronicled her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and her subsequent life in exile. The work, originally published as a series of graphic novels in the early 2000s, became a cultural phenomenon and was translated into numerous languages.

The graphic novel was later adapted into an animated film in 2007, which Satrapi co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud. The film received critical acclaim and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature, bringing her work to an even wider international audience.

Born in Iran, Satrapi moved to France where she developed her career as an author and illustrator. Her work often explored themes of identity, exile, and the clash between traditional and modern cultures, drawing from her personal experiences growing up between two worlds.

Beyond 'Persepolis', Satrapi authored several other graphic novels and ventured into filmmaking with live-action movies. Her artistic work was characterized by its stark black-and-white visual style and its unflinching examination of political and social issues.
