New Mexico lawmakers announced they will issue subpoenas to multiple government agencies and private institutions as part of a legislative investigation into Jeffrey Epstein's activities within the state.

The subpoena campaign represents the first major step in lawmakers' stated effort to provide a comprehensive account of what the late financier did in New Mexico. Epstein owned a large ranch in the state where he allegedly conducted some of his activities.

The legislative action comes as new documents related to Epstein continue to emerge publicly. Court filings and other materials have provided additional details about Epstein's network of contacts and activities before his death in federal custody in 2019.

Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking minors. He died by suicide in his Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial. His case has continued to generate scrutiny of his associates and the institutions that had relationships with him.

The New Mexico investigation appears focused on documenting Epstein's presence and activities within state borders. Lawmakers have not yet specified which particular agencies or organizations will receive subpoenas, though they indicated the scope will include both public and private entities.
