Former Vice President Mike Pence has publicly criticized several Trump administration policies related to the Department of Justice and the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack during recent television appearances.

Pence called the Trump administration's $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" fund for the Department of Justice "a bad idea" and urged the administration to eliminate it. Speaking to NBC News, Pence described the fund as something the administration should "just drop."

The former vice president also accused the current White House of whitewashing the January 6 attack on the Capitol. During an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan," Pence said he had "certainly seen evidence" of such efforts by the Trump administration.

"I was offended on the anniversary of Jan. 6 when the White House put out a timeline that literally blamed Capitol Hill police for the riot that took place that day," Pence told CBS, referring to the administration's characterization of events surrounding the Capitol attack.

Separately, the Trump administration has made cuts to federal violence intervention programs. In April 2025, more than $800 million in grants from the Department of Justice's office of justice programs was eliminated, affecting funding for programs aimed at preventing and responding to gun violence among other initiatives. Community violence intervention advocates have expressed concern that these cuts could impact crime reduction efforts, particularly as homicides in the United States had been declining in recent years following increases during the COVID-19 pandemic.
