Illegal Mine Collapse in China Kills Five, Injures One
Five people died and one was injured when an illegal mining operation collapsed in Yunnan province, China, just over a week after a deadly Shanxi mine explosion.
Five people were killed and one injured in a mining collapse at an illegal operation in southwest China on Sunday, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. in Baiwu village, Huize County in Yunnan province. Rescuers pulled six people from the collapsed site and transported them to a hospital, where five succumbed to their injuries. The survivor was reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse. Xinhua did not specify the type of mining operation involved in the incident.
The tragedy comes just over a week after China experienced its deadliest coal mine explosion in recent years. That blast killed at least 82 people in Shanxi province in northern China, with local officials citing "serious violations" of the law by the mine's operator.
Illegal mining operations have been a persistent safety concern in China, where regulatory violations and unsafe working conditions have led to numerous industrial accidents in recent years. The close timing of these two incidents highlights ongoing challenges in mine safety enforcement across the country.
