Chicago Teen Graduates High School After ICE Detention Across Six States
Ricardo Hernandez-Navarrete, 18, was detained by ICE during a routine immigration appointment and held across multiple states before graduating.
An 18-year-old Chicago resident has graduated from high school after spending months in federal immigration custody across six states, following his detention during what was described as a routine immigration appointment.
Ricardo Hernandez-Navarrete was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when he and his mother attended the scheduled appointment. According to Hernandez-Navarrete, authorities did not initially explain the reason for his arrest during the detention.
Following his arrest, Hernandez-Navarrete was transported to detention facilities in six different states while in ICE custody. The extended detention period occurred during what would have been his final months of high school.
Despite the disruption to his education, Hernandez-Navarrete was able to complete his high school requirements and graduate after his release from detention. He has expressed his desire to remain in the United States, stating he has been "doing the right things."
Both Hernandez-Navarrete and his mother continue to face the possibility of deportation proceedings, according to reports. The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by families navigating the U.S. immigration system, particularly those involving young adults who have spent significant portions of their lives in the country.
