A 56-year-old woman died after falling into an open maintenance hole on a Manhattan street, according to authorities.

The woman had parked her SUV and exited the vehicle when she fell approximately 10 feet into the uncovered hole. The incident occurred on a busy New York City street.

The maintenance hole was managed by Con Edison, the utility company that provides electricity and gas service to the New York City area. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been launched.
