Train hits bus at Bangkok crossing, killing at least 8 people
A cargo train collided with a public bus at a railway crossing in Bangkok, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 20 others.
At least eight people died and more than 20 were injured when a cargo train struck a public bus at a railway crossing in Bangkok on Saturday afternoon, Thai authorities said.
The collision occurred near an airport rail link station in the central area of Thailand's capital. Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat told reporters at the crash site that all fatalities were found on the bus, though it remained unclear how many people were aboard the vehicle.
Social media videos showed the moment of impact, with a line of vehicles stopped at the railway crossing when the train hit an orange bus. The collision dragged several nearby vehicles along the tracks before the bus became engulfed in flames. Motorcycles and their riders were also thrown onto the road during the crash.
The city's emergency services Erawan Medical Center confirmed the casualty figures. Rescue workers were later seen entering the charred bus after flames were brought under control.
When asked about reports that the bus had stopped on the railway tracks and whether crossing barriers had failed to lower properly, Siripong said the matter required further investigation. The cause of the collision remains under review by authorities.
