French Woman, 85, Detained by ICE After Missing Immigration Appointment

An 85-year-old French citizen who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement last month has spoken publicly about her experience at a Louisiana immigration detention facility. Marie-Thérèse Ross-Mahé was arrested by U.S. authorities after missing an immigration appointment.
Ross-Mahé, who has since been released, described hearing children and babies crying at night during her detention at the facility. Her case gained international attention as part of broader immigration enforcement actions.
The detention occurred amid what Ross-Mahé characterized as a late-in-life love story that brought her to the United States. She is now back in France and spoke about her experience nearly a month after her release from custody.
Separately, Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) is introducing legislation aimed at strengthening congressional oversight of ICE operations. The measure would permanently codify existing rights of Congress members to conduct oversight of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security.
McIver's legislation comes one year after an incident at an immigration detention facility in New Jersey that resulted in criminal charges against her following what was described as a scuffle during a congressional visit.
