House Passes Bill Allowing Year-Round E15 Ethanol Fuel Sales
The House voted 218-203 to pass legislation codifying year-round sales of E15 ethanol fuel, with bipartisan but divided support.
The House of Representatives passed legislation Wednesday to allow year-round sales of E15 ethanol fuel, marking a significant development for the biofuel industry and corn-producing states.
The bill passed by a vote of 218-203, with 122 Republicans and 95 Democrats supporting the measure, along with one independent. Opposition came from 90 Republicans and 113 Democrats, highlighting the bipartisan divisions on the issue.
E15 is a gasoline blend containing 15 percent ethanol, compared to the more common E10 blend with 10 percent ethanol. Currently, E15 sales are restricted during summer months due to air quality concerns, as the fuel can contribute to smog formation in hot weather.
The legislation represents a major victory for lawmakers from corn-producing states, where ethanol production provides economic benefits to agricultural communities. Corn is the primary feedstock used in ethanol production in the United States.
However, the measure faced strong opposition from some Republicans who raised concerns about the environmental and economic impacts of expanded ethanol use. Critics have previously argued that increased ethanol production can drive up food prices and may not provide the intended environmental benefits.
The bill now moves to the Senate, where its prospects remain uncertain given the divided support demonstrated in the House vote.
