Conflicting reports emerge about NBA player deaths
Multiple news outlets published contradictory reports about the deaths of different NBA players, creating confusion about which claims are accurate.

Conflicting reports emerged Tuesday regarding the deaths of NBA players, with different news sources publishing contradictory information that could not be independently verified.
The New York Post reported that Jason Collins, who became the NBA's first openly gay player in 2013, had died at age 47. According to their report, Collins had announced in November that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma, and his family reportedly confirmed his passing on Tuesday.
Separately, Yahoo Sports published a headline stating that Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke had died at age 29, with the team, NBA and his agency allegedly confirming the news. However, the article contained no supporting content below the headline.
The contradictory nature of these reports, combined with the lack of official statements from the NBA, team organizations, or verified family sources, has created uncertainty about the accuracy of either claim. Neither Collins nor Clarke have posted on their verified social media accounts, and no major news organizations have independently confirmed either death.
Collins, 45, played 13 seasons in the NBA and made history in April 2013 when he became the first active player in a major American professional sport to publicly come out as gay. Clarke, 28, has been with the Memphis Grizzlies since 2019 and averaged 10.0 points per game last season.
