Trump Suggests Vance-Rubio Could Form 2028 Presidential Ticket
President Trump floated Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Rubio as potential 2028 running mates during White House event.
President Donald Trump on Monday suggested that Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio could form a "dream team" ticket for the 2028 presidential election.
Speaking at a White House event, Trump polled attendees on their preferences between the two officials, asking "Who likes J.D. Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio?" according to reports from the gathering.
The president stopped short of formally endorsing either official for a future presidential run, instead gauging audience reaction to both potential candidates. Trump described the pairing as a possible "dream team" for the next election cycle.
Both Vance and Rubio currently serve in senior roles in the Trump administration. Vance, who was elected vice president alongside Trump in 2024, previously served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio. Rubio, the current Secretary of State, is a former presidential candidate who also represents Florida in the Senate.
The 2028 presidential election is still more than three years away, and Trump's comments represent early speculation about potential Republican candidates for that cycle.
