WNBA Secures $3+ Billion Media Rights Deal; Mixed Earnings for Media Companies
The WNBA expanded its media rights agreement to over $3 billion while media companies reported varied first-quarter results.
The Women's National Basketball Association has significantly expanded its media rights deal, growing the agreement from $2.2 billion to over $3 billion after adding new broadcast partners to its 11-year portfolio. The enhanced deal carries an average annual value of approximately $281 million over the contract's duration.
The expanded WNBA agreement represents a substantial increase in the league's media valuation as it continues to grow its audience and commercial appeal. The deal includes multiple broadcast partners working together to carry league content over the next decade.
Meanwhile, media companies reported mixed financial results for the first quarter. IHeartMedia, the streaming media and radio company, posted revenue growth of 9.6% to $884.2 million, driven by increased demand for digital and podcast advertising. The company's performance reflected continued strength in digital advertising markets.
In contrast, telehealth platform Hims & Hers Health swung to a first-quarter loss of $92.1 million. The company attributed the loss to higher expenses across multiple areas, including operations, technology, and general administrative functions. The results highlighted ongoing investment costs as the telehealth sector continues to scale operations.
