The Philippine House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday, marking the second time lawmakers have moved to remove her from office.

The House voted 255-26 with nine abstentions to approve impeachment charges against Duterte, including allegations of unexplained wealth, misuse of state funds, and making threats to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The chamber is dominated by allies of President Marcos.

The impeachment complaints now advance to the Senate, which will convene as a tribunal to conduct Duterte's trial. If convicted, she would be disqualified from running for president in future elections.

Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, has generally denied wrongdoing but has not provided detailed responses to the specific criminal allegations against her.

This marks the second impeachment attempt against Duterte. Last year, the House also voted to impeach her, but she survived that effort and was not tried after the Supreme Court intervened due to what was described as a constitutional technicality.

Protesters gathered outside the House of Representatives in Quezon City on Monday calling for Duterte's impeachment, demonstrating public interest in the high-profile political proceedings.
