Body of US soldier recovered after going missing during military exercise in Morocco
The remains of 1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr. were found in waters off Morocco's coast after he went missing May 2 during a training exercise.
The body of a U.S. Army soldier who went missing during military exercises in Morocco has been recovered, the U.S. military announced Sunday.
Moroccan search teams found the remains of 1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr. on Saturday in waters within a mile of where he went missing on May 2. The 27-year-old soldier was an Air Defense Artillery officer assigned to Charlie Battery, 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command.
Key was one of two U.S. soldiers who fell off a cliff during what officials described as a recreational hike in the Cap Draa area of Morocco. The search for the second missing soldier is continuing, according to a U.S. defense official.
Both soldiers were reported missing after participating in African Lion, an annual multinational military exercise involving the United States, NATO allies, and African nations. The exercise is among the largest of its kind in the region.
The recovery operation was conducted by Moroccan military personnel working with U.S. forces. No additional details about the circumstances of the incident have been released.
