Former University of South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia announced Thursday that he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer.

Garcia, who played for the Gamecocks from 2008 to 2011, made the announcement publicly, though details about his treatment plan and prognosis were not immediately available.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. Stage 4 indicates the cancer has spread to distant parts of the body from where it originated.
