A United Airlines flight struck a light pole while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, injuring a driver on the New Jersey Turnpike and causing damage to the aircraft, according to officials.
Flight UA169, a Boeing 767-400 operating from Venice, Italy to Newark, hit the light pole during its final approach to the airport. The incident occurred over the New Jersey Turnpike, where the low-flying aircraft made contact with roadway infrastructure.
A driver on the turnpike was injured in the incident, though the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear. The aircraft also sustained damage from the collision with the pole.
The National Transportation Safety Board announced Sunday that it has launched an investigation into the incident. The NTSB will examine the circumstances that led to the aircraft striking the light pole during what should have been a routine landing approach.
Newark Liberty International Airport is located adjacent to the New Jersey Turnpike, one of the busiest highways in the northeastern United States. Aircraft approaching the airport regularly fly over the highway at low altitudes as they prepare to land.
United Airlines has not immediately responded to requests for comment about the incident or the status of passengers and crew aboard the flight.
