Cuban Immigrant Dies in ICE Custody, 18th Death This Year
A 33-year-old Cuban man died at a Georgia immigration detention center, marking the 18th ICE custody death in 2024.

A Cuban immigrant died this week at an immigration detention center in Georgia, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials and congressional notifications reviewed by news outlets.
Denny Adán González, 33, died at the privately operated Stewart detention center. ICE confirmed his death in a press release Friday morning, stating that the death is being investigated as a suicide.
González's death marks the 18th fatality in ICE custody during 2024, putting the agency on pace to potentially set a new record for annual detainee deaths. The previous high for ICE custody deaths occurred in recent years as the agency has expanded its detention operations.
The Stewart detention center, located in rural Georgia, is operated by a private contractor and houses immigrants awaiting deportation proceedings or other immigration determinations. ICE has not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding González's death.
ICE officials said they are conducting a standard review of the incident in coordination with other agencies. The death will also be subject to an independent investigation as required by agency protocols for all custody deaths.
