Music Industry Grapples with AI Technology Opportunities and Challenges
African music industry delegates discuss AI's potential benefits and risks as artists face unauthorized AI-generated content.

Music industry professionals gathered in Cape Verde to examine the growing impact of artificial intelligence on the creative sector, highlighting both opportunities and concerns about the technology's role in music production.
The discussion comes as artists increasingly encounter unauthorized AI-generated content featuring their work. Nigerian singer-songwriter Fave experienced this firsthand in July when an AI choir version of one of her tracks went viral without her permission. Rather than pursue legal action, she chose to record an official remix incorporating the AI-assisted elements and added it to her official discography.
"She essentially reclaimed the 'AI version' and released it as her own official expression," said Oyinkansola Fawehinmi, a Lagos-based entertainment lawyer, describing the approach as smart and business-aware.
The incident reflects broader challenges facing the music industry as AI technology becomes more sophisticated. While some see potential benefits in AI-assisted production and composition tools, industry delegates emphasized that artificial intelligence cannot replace authentic human creativity and talent.
The Cape Verde event highlighted the need for the music industry to develop strategies for managing AI's impact while protecting artists' rights and maintaining the integrity of creative work. As AI technology continues to evolve, the industry faces ongoing questions about how to balance innovation with artistic authenticity.
