Interior Department to Refund Wind Companies That Abandon Projects for Fossil Fuels
The Trump administration will pay energy companies to abandon offshore wind projects and invest in oil and gas instead.

The Interior Department announced Monday it will issue refunds to energy companies that abandon their offshore wind development plans in favor of investing in fossil fuel projects.
Global Infrastructure Partners, which is part of BlackRock, and Golden State Wind are among the companies that will receive refunds for money they previously paid for offshore wind development opportunities. In exchange, the companies have agreed to invest in oil and gas projects.
The arrangement follows a similar deal the administration made with French energy giant TotalEnergies, establishing what appears to be a broader policy approach toward offshore wind development.
The Interior Department has authority over offshore energy leasing and development on federal waters. Companies typically pay fees upfront for the rights to develop renewable energy projects in designated offshore areas.
Details about the specific refund amounts or the timeline for the fossil fuel investments were not immediately available. The policy represents a shift from previous offshore wind development initiatives that had been promoted under the prior administration.
