Authorities have recovered the body of one crew member from a cargo ship that overturned near the Northern Mariana Islands during a typhoon, the U.S. Coast Guard announced Tuesday.

U.S. Air Force divers used an underwater remotely operated drone to search the interior of the 145-foot vessel Mariana and recovered the body. Additional divers from the Japan Coast Guard examined the ship but found no other crew members.

The crew of the U.S.-registered cargo ship initially contacted the Coast Guard on April 15, reporting that the vessel had lost its starboard engine during Super Typhoon Sinlaku and required assistance. The Coast Guard lost contact with the ship the following day.

Heavy winds from the typhoon initially hampered search efforts. The overturned vessel was eventually spotted Saturday approximately 40 miles northeast of Pagan, one of the islands in the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory. Debris including a partially submerged inflatable life raft was found about 110 miles from the ship.

"Coast Guard aircrews continue to search for the five missing crewmen and an orange 12-person life raft in the vicinity of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Super Typhoon Sinlaku caused significant wind damage and flooding across the Northern Mariana Islands. The Coast Guard said it continues searching using all available resources in coordination with partner agencies.
