French soldier killed in attack on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon
A French soldier was killed and three others injured in an attack on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, with France blaming Hezbollah for the incident.
A French soldier was killed and three others wounded Saturday morning in an attack on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, French President Emmanuel Macron announced.
Macron identified the deceased as Staff Sergeant Florian Montorio of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment from Montauban. The three injured soldiers were evacuated following the attack.
In a statement posted on social media, Macron said "everything suggests that responsibility for this attack lies with Hezbollah." He called on Lebanese authorities to immediately arrest those responsible and fulfill their obligations to support UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon.
The attack represents a significant escalation in tensions involving international peacekeeping forces in the region. UNIFIL has maintained a presence in southern Lebanon as part of efforts to monitor the border area and support stability.
Macron expressed condolences to the families of the affected soldiers, stating that "the nation bows in respect and extends its support to the families of our soldiers and to all our military personnel engaged for peace in Lebanon."
