GOP lawmakers advance immigration enforcement measures through separate initiatives
Republican senators plan White House meeting on DHS funding while House member introduces bill targeting asylum fraud.

Republican lawmakers are pursuing multiple approaches to strengthen immigration enforcement through separate legislative and funding initiatives.
Senate Republican Whip John Barrasso of Wyoming and Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham of South Carolina are scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House on Friday. The meeting will focus on advancing funding for immigration enforcement portions of the Department of Homeland Security using only Republican votes, according to Barrasso's announcement.
Separately, Representative Tom Tiffany has introduced legislation called the SAFER Act, which would strip asylum status from individuals who return to visit countries they claimed to have fled from due to persecution. The Wisconsin Republican's bill was prompted by the recent arrest of a relative of former Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani on charges related to an allegedly fraudulent asylum claim filed in Los Angeles.
The legislative efforts represent the GOP's continued focus on immigration policy enforcement in the early days of the new congressional session. The Senate meeting indicates Republicans are exploring ways to fund DHS immigration operations through reconciliation or other procedures that would not require Democratic support.
Both initiatives reflect broader Republican priorities around strengthening border security and addressing what party members characterize as weaknesses in the current asylum system. The timing suggests coordination among GOP lawmakers to advance immigration-related measures across multiple fronts.
