Over 70 migrants feared dead in Mediterranean boat capsizing off Libya
A migrant boat capsized off Libya's coast with more than 70 people feared drowned, while 32 others were rescued by ships near Italy.
More than 70 migrants are feared dead after their boat capsized in rough seas off the coast of Libya, according to rescue organizations operating in the Mediterranean.
The vessel had departed Libya just hours before it began taking on water and capsized due to turbulent weather conditions. Rescue ships operating near Italy managed to save 32 migrants from the water, but 71 others are reported missing and presumed drowned.
The incident represents one of the deadliest migrant boat disasters in recent months along the dangerous Mediterranean crossing route. Thousands of migrants attempt the perilous journey from North Africa to Europe each year, with many departing from Libya's coastline.
Separately, details emerged Friday during a trial in France regarding another fatal incident involving migrant crossings. A Sudanese people smuggler identified as Mukhalas appeared at Dunkirk Criminal Court in connection with deaths during a Channel crossing attempt.
The Mediterranean route from Libya to Italy remains one of the world's most dangerous migration paths. Weather conditions and overcrowded vessels contribute to frequent capsizings, with rescue organizations estimating thousands of deaths occur annually along this route.
