One person was killed and dozens more injured during a pre-match rally at the Alejandro Villanuez Stadium in Lima, Peru, according to football club Alianza Lima.

Hundreds of fans had gathered for a "flag-waving event" on Friday at the stadium, known locally as Matute, ahead of a derby match between Alianza Lima and local rivals Universitario de Deportes scheduled for the following day.

Videos broadcast by local television stations showed a large crowd of fans in the south stands amid an explosion of fireworks during the rally. Media reports indicated that approximately 60 people were injured in the incident.

Initial reports suggested that a wall had collapsed at the stadium during the event, but Alianza Lima has denied these claims, stating there were no structural failures at the venue.

The club issued a statement offering condolences and solidarity for the casualties. The exact cause of the deaths and injuries remains under investigation as authorities work to determine what led to the incident during what was intended to be a celebratory pre-match gathering.
