NYC Mayor Mamdani Reverses TikTok Ban, Expands Universal Programs
Mayor Zohran Mamdani lifts city's TikTok ban with new security rules while advancing universal childcare and car-free park initiatives.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has reversed the city's ban on TikTok use by government agencies, implementing new security protocols while allowing municipal departments to return to the social media platform. The decision marks a significant policy shift from the previous administration's stance on the Chinese-owned app.
Under the new policy, city agencies will be permitted to use TikTok but must follow strict device and security guidelines. The mayor previously used TikTok as one of several social media platforms to amplify his campaign messaging during his successful mayoral run.
Separately, Mamdani's administration is advancing initiatives to expand universal services across the city. The mayor has moved forward with plans to create free preschool centers, including in some of the city's wealthiest neighborhoods, as part of his broader commitment to expand universal childcare access throughout New York City.
The administration is also pursuing transportation policy changes, building on existing car-free zones in Central Park and Prospect Park. Officials are exploring options to extend vehicle restrictions to additional parks throughout the city's five boroughs.
These policy moves represent early initiatives from Mamdani's administration as the new mayor works to implement campaign promises around technology policy, universal services, and urban planning reforms.
