Mexican National Dies in ICE Custody at California Detention Center

A Mexican national died while in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody at a detention facility outside Los Angeles, marking at least the 14th death in ICE custody since the beginning of the year.
José Guadalupe Ramos was found unconscious and unresponsive in his bunk at the Adelanto detention center on March 25, according to an ICE press release. Security staff discovered Ramos during routine operations at the facility.
Detention center staff immediately attempted life-saving procedures, including CPR, before calling emergency medical services. Ramos was transported to Victory Valley Global Medical Center in nearby Victorville for further treatment.
Despite medical intervention, Ramos was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9:29 p.m. on March 25. ICE has not released details about the cause of death or Ramos's medical history.
The death brings the total number of fatalities in ICE custody to at least 14 for 2026. ICE maintains detention facilities across the United States to house immigrants awaiting deportation proceedings or other immigration-related processes.
The Adelanto ICE Processing Center, operated by the GEO Group under contract with ICE, is located in San Bernardino County, California, approximately 85 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
