Sports Lender Sues Broker Over $4.4M Scam Involving Fake NFL Player Identity
Aliya Sports Finance Fund alleges broker Sure Sports failed to verify borrower's identity in loan that targeted Green Bay Packers player Xavier McKinney.

A sports finance company is suing a loan broker over a $4.375 million fraud scheme in which someone allegedly impersonated Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney to secure funding.
Aliya Sports Finance Fund filed the lawsuit against Sure Sports, a longtime sports industry loan broker, in Florida state court approximately one year ago. The case is scheduled for a three-week trial beginning July 13.
According to court documents, Aliya wired the funds to what it believed was McKinney seeking a loan, only to discover months later that the borrower was allegedly an imposter. The lawsuit alleges Sure Sports failed to perform adequate due diligence when introducing the purported McKinney to the lender.
The FBI is investigating the transaction, according to court papers. Both companies are headquartered in Florida, where the case was filed.
Aliya Sports Finance Fund's parent company holds an investment stake in English football club Reading FC. The lawsuit seeks damages related to the allegedly fraudulent transaction and the broker's role in facilitating it.
The case highlights potential vulnerabilities in the growing market for loans to professional athletes, where large sums are often involved and borrower verification processes may face unique challenges.
