Spanish woman dies by euthanasia after court battle with family
Noelia Castillo, 25, died by euthanasia in Spain after winning a legal battle against family members who opposed her decision.

A 25-year-old Spanish woman died by euthanasia on Thursday following a lengthy legal battle with family members who sought to prevent her death.
Noelia Castillo died at the Sant Pere de Ribes assisted living facility near Barcelona where she had been residing. Her death concluded legal proceedings that lasted more than a year and a half.
Earlier this week, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in Castillo's favor, allowing her to proceed with the procedure. The court's decision came after extended litigation involving her family members who had opposed her request.
Castillo had been left paraplegic following an incident in which she jumped from a roof after what sources describe as a sexual assault. She had been living at the assisted care facility since that time.
Spain legalized euthanasia in 2021, making it one of the few countries worldwide to permit the practice under specific medical circumstances. The law allows terminally ill patients or those suffering unbearable chronic conditions to request medically assisted death.
The case highlights ongoing debates about end-of-life decisions and the rights of individuals versus family wishes in euthanasia cases across Europe.
