North Carolina Senate Leader Phil Berger Loses GOP Primary by 23 Votes
North Carolina Senate leader Phil Berger conceded defeat to Sheriff Sam Page in a Republican primary decided by just 23 votes after a recount.

North Carolina Senate leader Phil Berger has conceded defeat in a Republican primary race that was decided by just 23 votes following a recount.
Berger, who has served as the leader of North Carolina's state Senate, lost to Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page in the GOP primary for state Senate District 26. The race was among the closest in the state during the primary election earlier this month.
Despite having significant campaign advantages including financial resources, his position of power in state government, and an endorsement from former President Trump, Berger was unable to overcome local opposition in the district.
The narrow margin triggered a recount, but the results confirmed Page's victory. Berger officially conceded the race on Tuesday following the completion of the recount process.
The upset represents a significant political development in North Carolina, as Berger has been a prominent figure in state Republican politics and has held leadership positions in the state legislature. Page, as the local sheriff, will now advance to represent the Republican Party in the general election for the state Senate seat.
