A civil jury in Santa Monica, California found Bill Cosby liable Monday for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in 1972, ordering the 88-year-old comedian to pay $19.25 million in damages.

After a nearly two-week trial, jurors determined that Cosby was responsible for the sexual battery and assault of Donna Motsinger, who was working as a server at a restaurant in Sausalito near San Francisco at the time. The jury deliberated for just over a day before reaching their verdict.

According to Motsinger's 2023 lawsuit, Cosby invited her to attend one of his stand-up comedy shows at a theater in nearby San Carlos when both were in their 30s. She alleged that Cosby gave her wine and two pills that she believed were aspirin, causing her to drift in and out of consciousness as two men placed her in a limousine. Motsinger said she later woke up at her home with most of her clothes removed and believed she had been drugged and sexually assaulted.

Cosby's attorneys argued the allegations relied on speculation, noting that Motsinger admitted she had no clear memory of what occurred. Defense attorney Jennifer Bonjean said they were disappointed with the verdict and planned to appeal. Cosby did not testify during the trial.

The jury awarded Motsinger $17.5 million in past damages and $1.75 million for future damages, including compensation for mental suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, and emotional distress. A separate punitive damages phase was scheduled to begin later Monday.

This verdict comes nearly five years after Cosby was released from a Pennsylvania prison when the state Supreme Court overturned his 2018 criminal conviction for sexually assaulting Andrea Constand. Motsinger's case is among dozens of similar allegations made against Cosby by at least 60 women, all of which he has denied. In 2022, another Santa Monica jury awarded $500,000 to a woman who said Cosby sexually assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in 1975.
