A shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon at a Department of Veterans Affairs clinic in Jasper, Georgia, resulting in one person being hospitalized and the gunman being shot and killed by police.

Jasper police responded to reports of shots fired at the VA clinic around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Officers confronted the gunman outside the facility, where he was shot and killed, according to Jasper Police Chief Matt Dawkins. One person was airlifted to a hospital following the incident.

The gunman was identified as being from the Jasper area, though police have not released additional details about his identity or background. "We don't know what led up to it," Dawkins told reporters at the scene. A Pickens County sheriff's spokesman said it was unclear whether the suspect had a military background.

Chief Dawkins confirmed that no other injuries occurred inside the clinic. "Everybody in there, as far as I know, nobody else is injured, the people inside, just one victim," he said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Georgia Bureau of Investigation will conduct the investigation.

The Pickens County VA clinic is an outpatient facility that opened in summer 2020, offering primary care, specialty health services, laboratory work, telehealth and mental health care. The facility is located in a strip mall in Jasper, a town of approximately 5,000 people situated about 60 miles north of downtown Atlanta at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Photographs from the scene showed multiple law enforcement officers in tactical gear responding to the incident. The clinic was established to provide veterans with healthcare services closer to their homes in the region.
