At least 23 people were killed and more than 100 wounded in suspected suicide bombings Monday night in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria's Borno state, police confirmed Tuesday.

The attacks targeted crowded locations across the northeastern city, with explosions reported at a major market and at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. Police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso said 108 people sustained varying degrees of injuries in what he described as attacks by suspected suicide bombers.

Sirajo Abdullahi, head of operations at Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency in Maiduguri, said emergency services were still managing casualties at local hospitals. "We can't give the actual figure until we count," Abdullahi said shortly after the attacks.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombings, but suspicion has fallen on Boko Haram, the jihadi group that launched an insurgency in northeastern Nigeria in 2009. The extremist organization has grown to include thousands of fighters across different factions, including the Islamic State West Africa Province.

Maiduguri has been at the center of the conflict but had experienced relative peace in recent years compared to rural areas where extremist attacks continue. Local resident Mohammed Hassan, a member of a volunteer security group, called it "one of the deadliest attacks in Maiduguri in years."

The bombings represent an escalation in violence as extremist groups have recently intensified attacks against Nigerian military bases, killing officers and soldiers while seizing weapons and ammunition.
