Texas lawmakers clash at Austin airport over DHS funding during shutdown
Sen. John Cornyn and Rep. Greg Casar confronted each other at Austin airport over Department of Homeland Security funding as shutdown enters second month.

Texas Senator John Cornyn and Representative Greg Casar engaged in a public confrontation at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Monday over the ongoing Department of Homeland Security funding lapse that has entered its second month.
Cornyn, a Republican senator facing a primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, arrived at the airport to deliver food from Texas-based chain Whataburger to Transportation Security Administration workers who have missed their first full paycheck during the partial shutdown. As he approached the terminal, he encountered Casar, a Democratic congressman whose district includes Austin.
According to a Casar spokesperson, the congressman was at the airport to catch a flight back to Washington, D.C., when the confrontation occurred. What was intended as Cornyn's outreach event to TSA workers turned into an impromptu debate between the two lawmakers over the funding impasse.
The encounter highlights the political tensions surrounding the DHS shutdown as TSA employees work without pay and concerns grow about potential delays at airports nationwide. The funding lapse has affected thousands of federal workers responsible for airport security and other homeland security functions.
Both lawmakers represent Texas constituencies but from opposing parties, reflecting the broader partisan divide in Congress over resolving the Department of Homeland Security funding crisis that has stretched into its second month.
