A Russian schoolteacher has created an Oscar-nominated documentary that examines state propaganda in Russian schools following the country's invasion of Ukraine.
The film, titled "Mr. Nobody Against Putin," was made by Pasha Talankin, who used his camera to document how the Russian government's messaging about the war was being conveyed to schoolchildren across the country. The documentary captures the indoctrination process that took place in schools nationwide.
Talankin, who now lives in exile, worked with co-director David Borenstein on the project. The film represents what the creators describe as an act of resistance, aiming to expose government messaging about the conflict.
The documentary has gained international recognition, receiving an Academy Award nomination. The film provides insight into how state messaging was implemented in Russian educational institutions during the early period of the Ukraine conflict.
Talankin's decision to document these practices ultimately led to his departure from Russia, where he had worked as an educator before creating the film that brought him international attention.
