Medicare Chief Dr. Oz Vows Crackdown on Hospice Fraud Following CBS Investigation
Dr. Mehmet Oz, head of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, pledged to combat hospice fraud after CBS News investigation revealed red flags in LA County hospices.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, who leads the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under the Trump administration, announced plans to cut off Medicare funding to hospices suspected of fraud following a CBS News investigation.
The investigation examined hospice operations in Los Angeles County and identified numerous facilities displaying red flags for potential fraudulent activity. The findings prompted a response from the federal Medicare administrator about enforcement measures.
Speaking to CBS correspondent Adam Yamaguchi, Dr. Oz outlined how the federal government plans to address the fraud concerns. He emphasized the administration's commitment to protecting taxpayer funds, stating "Do not steal from the American people."
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services oversees Medicare payments to hospice providers nationwide. Hospice fraud can involve billing for services not provided, enrolling patients who don't meet eligibility requirements, or extending care beyond appropriate timeframes.
Dr. Oz indicated that suspected fraudulent hospice providers would face suspension of Medicare payments as part of the enforcement response. The announcement follows ongoing federal efforts to combat healthcare fraud across various medical services covered by Medicare.
