Former Jets RB Matt Snell, Super Bowl III Champion, Dies at 84
Matt Snell, who helped the New York Jets win Super Bowl III in 1969, has died at age 84.

Matt Snell, the former New York Jets running back who played a key role in the team's Super Bowl III victory, has died at age 84.
Snell was an integral part of the Jets' historic 16-7 upset victory over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III on January 12, 1969. The win validated Joe Namath's famous guarantee and marked the first Super Bowl victory by an AFL team over the established NFL.
The running back spent his entire nine-year professional career with the Jets from 1964 to 1972. He was selected by New York in the first round of the 1964 AFL Draft out of Ohio State University.
Snell's relationship with the Jets organization became strained following his retirement, leading to a prolonged dispute that persisted for decades. The nature of the disagreement contributed to tension between the former player and the franchise throughout his later years.
No immediate cause of death was announced. Snell's passing marks the loss of another member of the Jets' championship team from their lone Super Bowl victory.
