MacFarlane, who joined CBS News in late 2021, made the announcement in a memo to colleagues that was also posted on LinkedIn. In his statement, he said he looks forward to "some independence" following his exit.

The correspondent is best known for his extensive coverage of the January 6 Capitol insurrection and related legal proceedings. His reporting has focused primarily on justice and legal affairs during his tenure at the network.

MacFarlane indicated in his memo that the decision to leave was his own choice. The departure surprised colleagues who learned of the news Monday morning.
