The NBA announced Monday it has canceled the Atlanta Hawks' controversial promotional event that was set to celebrate Atlanta's Magic City strip club, citing "significant concerns" from stakeholders across the league.

The Hawks had announced plans last month for a themed night paying tribute to what they called an "iconic cultural institution." The promotion was scheduled to feature Magic City's signature lemon pepper wings, a live performance by Atlanta rapper T.I., and exclusive merchandise.

The decision to cancel came after pushback from within the NBA community. San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet publicly opposed the promotion and urged the involved parties to reconsider the event. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver indicated the league received similar concerns from multiple sources.

"I believe canceling this promotion is the right decision for the broader NBA community," Silver wrote in announcing the cancellation. The commissioner said the league heard from various stakeholders expressing reservations about the strip club partnership.

The Hawks had positioned the event as celebrating a local cultural landmark, but the promotion drew criticism for its association with the adult entertainment venue. Magic City is a well-known strip club in Atlanta that has gained cultural prominence in hip-hop music and local dining culture, particularly for its wings.

The cancellation represents a rare instance of the NBA intervening to stop a team's promotional plans after they had been publicly announced. The Hawks have not announced any replacement event for the scheduled date.
